10 Reasons To Miss Being Pregnant

While I celebrated successfully accomplishing my 2010 New Year’s Resolution – to have a pregnancy-free year after being pregnant in both 2008 and 2009 – I have to admit that there are a few, mind you, only a few, precious things to miss about being pregnant:

1. Elastic waist bands

2. Getting your doctor’s full attention for longer than five minutes

3. Watching the shrimp inside you grow a face and legs

4. Those 300 extra calories a day to use on strawberry Pop-tarts and vending machine chips (aww, c’mon people, you didn’t eat all fruit and veggies all the time either)

5. Having a good reason to not cook dinner for three months

6. Hearing the labor stories, even the horror ones, because every labor and delivery has its own story (even the c-sections!)

7. An excuse for re-decorating an entire room

8. Loading up on free magazines at the OB office

9. Seeing your baby’s elbow jut across your belly like a shark cutting its way through the Pacific

10. A sense of pending adventure

What else did you love about being pregnant?

  1. I miss the feeling of the baby, the growing belly, and the glow. Sigh. Maybe one day I'll be pregnant again.

  2. I must say that I totally agree with the 10 that you listed, espcially #10 “A sense of pending adventure”. It's so fun having that due date in your head as another celebration for the year. It's also great to look forward to 3 months off of work… yipee! The endless compliments from total strangers are kind of nice too ;)

  3. @amber, I just started feeling nostalgic like you because my 2 year old moved up a class and is becoming such a big girl I want to cry. Time to have another kid!

@bloomer, yea, maternity leave is pretty sweet. Now, if only the U.S. would require the three months to be paid (at least three months! California is the only state that requirements employers to do that).

  4. I never thought I'd miss being pregnant, but there are a few things…

Strangers being extra nice to you. When you're pregnant you are a GODDESS.

Being able to use any restroom, any time because no one is going to tell a heavily pregnant woman that the restroom is employees only.

Being able to wear tight shirts and not fret over the bulk of the belly.

The kicks. I really miss those little kicks.

Gee. Thanks. Now I want to be pregnant again and it's TOTALLY not in the stars.

  5. I know Mandy, doesn't it just feel all nostalgic and yearning? I completely agree that an awesome benefit of being pregnant is not worrying about wearing tight tops. It has been the only time in my life where I wanted to show off my tummy. Plus, I think the pregnancy bump is THE best accessory ever!

  6. i was pregnant in 06, 07, skipped 08 and 09..it was really hard..made it through 10 too with some scares. lets see how '11 goes.

  7. Maternity clothes – there are some cute ones! And the kicking!

  8. Marjnhomer – you're a woman after my own uterus!

  9. I miss being pregnant mostly because of number 10. I just loved the feeling of expectation and love I had while pregnant. On the other hand, I had a lot of reasons why I didn't enjoy pregnancy so much. Getting super fat was one of them. Its so unfair that our bodies have to take the fall. Why can't human men be like seahorses and carry the babies, at least half of the time?
