Yep, it’s definitely that time of the year.
Inevitably the cold weather always seems to bring with it a sore throat for at least one of us if not both of us. This year was no different.
Like I mentioned before, though, we do our best to keep medicine at a minimum in our home, so I always try to use natural remedies for treating a sore throat before pulling out anything else.
The big advantage of using these treatments, too, is that they are much more budget-friendly.
The next time you’re warding off a sore throat try one of these frugal sore throat remedies, and see what a difference it makes!
This is one of my absolute favourites.
We always have local honey on hand, and it makes the perfect remedy for a sore throat.
Honey is a natural antibacterial agent, so it helps get rid of the germs.
Plus, it is anti-inflammatory, helping reduce soreness in your throat. The thickness and richness of this treatment also help naturally coat your throat.
Take a spoonful anytime you’re coughing or suffering from extreme soreness, and honey will help almost instantly.
2. Salt Water Rinse
Gargling or rinsing with salt water is another great way to treat a sore throat.
The salt helps cleanse the germs away, and the warm water soothes the pain away.
Add 1/8 a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and gargle several times. (Don’t swallow the rinse, though!)
You might have guessed that I’d add this one to the list with how much of a water advocate I am.
But, really, water does help a sore throat. The liquid itself helps keep your throat moist, which reduces soreness. It also helps eliminate the germs and other toxins from your body.
Constantly flushing your system with water will help you get over a sore throat faster, too.
Much like honey, cinnamon is a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent.
This remedy does double duty by helping heal your throat as well as relieve pain. My favourite way to use this one is adding some cinnamon to a spoonful of honey.
I just do a sprinkle any time I’m taking a “dose” of honey.
5. Vitamin C
Any time I feel a sore throat or cold coming on, I always start pumping the vitamin C.
This essential nutrient helps boost the immune system and shorts the length of a cold or another sickness.
You can take a supplement of vitamin C, but I like boosting my intake through natural sources of the vitamin. Orange juice is a staple when we’re dealing with a sore throat or cold.
I also like adding extra citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits in my diet when I’m warding off illness.
I love these remedies for treating a sore throat because they are natural and frugal! It’s easier to self-medicate with items that we always have on hand, like these frugal sore throat remedies.
The next time you are fighting a sore throat, consider heading to the cupboard before you head to the pharmacy.
You’ll save money and get a more natural remedy that is easier on your system!
