You want your baby to eat the best, most nutritious food.

But you simply don’t have the time or energy to whip up batch after batch of baby food.

The workaround? Use both jarred and homemade baby food, focusing on boosting flavor and using timesaving tricks.

These hacks can help you make homemade(ish) meals for your wee one in no time flat.

Homemade baby food hacks

1. Use leftovers to make baby food

Have veggies or meat leftover from dinner?

Blend those up with some chicken broth (and maybe some rice) to make a smooth consistency and then put it in a storage container for later.

Bam! A savory baby food recipe made in minutes.

2. Add flavor to baby cereal

Baby cereal mixed with breastmilk or formula is pretty bland, but you can make it more exciting for your child by adding in different flavors.

Try sprinkling in cinnamon or jarred apple/banana baby food. You can also puree blueberries to mix into the cereal.

3. Focus on uncommon fruits

You can find apple, banana, and pear baby food in any store.

Bu it’s harder to find a strawberries-and-bananas combo or an antioxidant-packed blend of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries.

Make these less common purees to help your tot get to know a wide variety of tastes.

4. Season baby food

Skip the salt and pepper, but have fun with other herbs and spices.

Nutmeg and cinnamon are fun flavorings you can add to jarred sweet potatoes, applesauce, bananas, and rice cereal.

(Heads up: Garlic and parmesan seasonings are too pungent for sensitive baby taste buds.)

5. Offer avocado

Avocado is like nature’s perfect baby food– soft, creamy, and pretty bland.

It’s filled with healthy fat and important nutrients. You can cut it into small pieces to let your little one practice picking things up and self-feeding. Or, mash it up with cilantro and/or a little chicken broth.

6. Make more veggies

Listen: Now is the time to expose your child to a range of vegetables.

In fact, in France parents feed their babies vegetables (not cereal) as their first foods. That’s just one of the reasons why French kids aren’t picky eaters.

Blend zucchini, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, or whatever other veggie is hard to find in store-bought baby food and blend with a little chicken broth to make it a creamy consistency.

Feeding your baby doesn’t have to be stressful or a huge time suck.

Instead, have fun adding flavorings to jarred baby food and focusing on making homemade baby food out of fruits and veggies that are harder to find commercially.

Using a combo of store-bought and homemade baby food is a perfectly fine workaround when life has too many moving parts to deal with one more thing.
